Breakthrough - The Kingdom of God Part 2

  1. Kingdom of God - Jesus Announces the Kingdom
    1. Jesus suggested four propositions:
      1. The Kingdom will come some time in the future
      2. The Kingdom has arrived now
      3. The Kingdom isn’t here, but it’s almost here
      4. The Kingdom has been delayed for a long time.
    2. The Kingdom will come some time in the future - last supper
      1. Matthew 26:29 “I tell you, I will never again drink of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom”
    3. The Kingdom has arrived now -
      1. Matthew 12:28 "If it is by the power of the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you."
    4. The Kingdom isn’t here, but it’s almost here -
      1. Luke 17:21 not here or there - in your midst (within your grasp)
    5. The Kingdom has been delayed for a long time
      1. Luke 19:11 As they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately. He said therefore, "A nobleman went into a far country to receive a kingdom and then return.”
    6. So the kingdom has already come according to Matthew 12 and Luke 17 and the coming of the kingdom is still some time in the future according to Luke 19 and Matthew 26.
    7. This is puzzling.
      1. It threw the Pharisees into confusion.
      2. It took John the Baptist off guard (Matthew 11:2–6).
      3. It caused one crowd to want to throw Jesus off a cliff (Luke 4:29)
      4. and another want to make him king (John 6:15).
      5. It baffled Pilate when Jesus was on trial (John 18:36–37).
      6. It left the apostles confused and hopeless between Good Friday and Easter (Luke 24:21).
  2. What does it mean?
    1. The end of the age has mysteriously invaded the present world
    2. There is a tension between the ‘already’ and the ‘not yet’
    3. An analogy from the last century - Oscar Cullmann
    4. The tension between fulfilment and consummation:
      1. 1 Corinthians 10:11 “These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfilment of the ages has come.”
      2. Revelation 1:8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty."
    5. All true at the same time!
      1. How do we understand it?
      2. It is the language of prophecy - not totally logical
      3. Only the ‘inner circle’ will get it (remember the ‘mystery’ in Mark 4)
    6. The big question is this: Is the kingdom of God a future reality to be hoped for or a present reality to experience now?
    7. The answer is that it is in some ways present and in some ways future.
      1. Many of its blessings are here to be enjoyed now; but many of them are not yet here.
      2. Some of its power is available now but not all of it.
      3. Some of the curse and misery of this present evil age can be overcome now by the presence of the kingdom. But some of it can’t be.
      4. The decisive battle against sin and Satan and sickness and death has been fought and won by Jesus in his death and resurrection, but the war is not over.
      5. Sin must be fought, Satan must be resisted, sickness must be prayed over
      6. and death must be endured until the second coming of the King and the consummation of the kingdom.
    8. The overriding issue for us is that we ARE Kingdom people NOW
      1. It’s a reality to be experienced now, but a mystery that must be taken hold of by revelation
      2. That’s the mystery I want to delve into next time.
